The town of Kalofer is steeped in history. It is the birthplace of Bulgaria’s famous poet Hristo Botev and where Bulgaria’s national hero, Vassil Levski was educated. The town stands 600m above sea level, surrounded by stunning views of the countryside, dominated by the Stara Planina’s highest peak, Mount Botev. The highest waterfall in Bulgaria, measuring 124.5 metres, is Raysko praskalo (the Paradise waterfall).
The ‘Tundza’ river runs through the town and the Byala Reka or ‘White river’ is situated 7kms from the town. Along the White river are a few cafes with bed and breakfast facilities leading to more walking trails. Here you will also find the Kalofer monastery nestled in the valley. The road leading to the summer camp “Panitsnite’, follows the river Tundza, winding it’s way to the foot of the trails. During the summer months you will find families and friends scattered along the banks enjoying picnics and BBQ’s along the cool river banks. Not far from Panitsnite is the summer youth camp Djendema eco-centre. Various organised horseback riding tours can be arranged from the tourist information centre.
The town has many tourist attractions including the Kalofer History House displaying traditional dress and festival costumes, photographs and Bulgarian crafts. There is also a room displaying traditional Kalofer lace complete with antique loom which visitors can try their hand at weaving. The entire collection was donated by locals.
Kalofer is the starting point of the eco trails to the Stara Planina. National Park “Central Bulgaria” is part of the European network of protected territories PAN Parks.
There is a tourist information centre offering leaflets and guides for the many activites and hotels and guest houses offering excellent accomodation in and around the town.
