Hissar spa resort sits on the southern slope of the Sredna Gora hills in Central Bulgaria, 42 kms from Bulgaria’s second largest city Plovdiv, very close to the Valley of the Roses.

Hissar, also known as Hissarya, is one of the best kept secrets in Bulgaria. Established as a spa resort many years ago after the discovery of the fantastic mineral waters, 22 mineral springs with temperatures ranging from 37 to 51 degrees C.

 

 

Discovering the Past

 

The town is surrounded by the remains of the old Roman fortress walls, built by the Roman Emperor Dioclecian. There have been many excavations of the fortress and the town, discoveries include an ampitheatre and Roman baths, also groups of volunteers visit Hissar as part of the archaeological team from all over the world to aid in the ongoing excavations.

 

 

The Town Today

 

Hissar is visited by many people wishing to learn more about the town’s history and revel in ancient monuments and beautiful nature.

Many visitors arrive in Hissar to sample the famous mineral waters and relax with healing treatments. The Hissar mineral water is lightly mineralized and have neither aroma, nor color. The mineral water is used both for drinking and balneological purposes. Good results have been reported on the treatment of diseases of the kidneys, liver, pancreas and the secretory system.

Hissar has many restaurants, bars and cafes as well as a few discos for night time entertainment., Restauarnt Izvora, Café bar Senor, Sound factory disco, the Orpheus night club and hotel Hissar piano bar, to name just a few. There are also many excellent hotels and guest houses offering accommodation. Some of the hotels offer massage and treatments.

If you want a more relaxed evening then stroll through the old ruins and parks where you will find many Bulgarian’s and visitors alike taking in the breathtaking scenery. With so much to offer, Hissar is fast becoming a popular destination for holidays and weekend breaks.

In 2007, will see the launch of three new SPA hotels, a paintball course, motor-cycle track and motocross competitions feature among the resort's new attractions. Another factor which positively influenced tourism in the region is the plans of property investors for new holiday facilities.

 

 

Landmarks and Places of Interest.

 

Archaeological Museum

The Hissar Fortress has the shape of an irregular tetragon with an area of 300 decares. Its walls are some of the best preserved fortress defences in Bulgaria.

Hissar Tomb is a late- Roman (4 th century) family tomb, consisting of an overarched passage, a staircase and a burial chamber with colour frescoes and 4-colour-mosaic.

The church-tomb from the 10 th – 12 thC, the mosque in the western part of the town.

The church Saint Dimitar was built in 1845-1850. The church was burnt down during April Rebellion and eventually rebuilt in 1882.

The fountain called ‘Momina salza’

Parks near Toplitza baths, near Momina Banya, the open-air theatre and Residence Park. Trees and plants found in these parks include Acacia, lime, lilac, pine, Canadian oak, silver spruce, magnolia, to name but a few.
